Police said “around 10 people” were killed in a shooting at a school in central Sweden on Tuesday, with the suspected perpetrator believed to be among those dead. A large number of people were injured after a gunman opened fire at a campus in the city of Örebro, according to Roberto Eid Forest, the head of the city’s police district. Speaking at a press conference late Tuesday, Forest explained that police were not able to report the exact death toll as the investigation was in its early stages. Police said that the perpetrator was not known to them before the shooting and that he was not connected to any gangs. They also said they did not believe the motive was terror related. Police did not say what type of weapon was used by the gunman.
In a tragic incident on Tuesday, around 10 people were killed in a shooting at an education centre in central Sweden, including the suspected assailant, police officials said. The shooting, which took place in Orebro, some 200 km (125 miles) west of Stockholm, at the Risbergska school for adults, marks the deadliest school attack in the country’s history. “Around 10 people have been killed today,” AFP quoted Orebro police chief Roberto Eid Forest as saying to reporters, adding that police could “not be more specific about the number due to the large number of wounded”.
Risbergska is an adult education center, meant for those who did not complete primary or secondary school, according to the BBC. The school also offers Swedish language classes for migrants. "The investigation is somewhat unclear," The local head of police, Roberto Eid Forest, said during a briefing. "It is unclear whether the shooting took place inside the school (building) or whether there may be more perpetrators." Andreas Sundling, 28, was among those forced to barricade themselves inside the school. "We heard three bangs and loud screams," he told Expressen newspaper while sheltering in a classroom. "Now we’re sitting here waiting to be evacuated from the school. The information we have received is that we should sit and wait." Police have made no statements regarding a potential motive for the shooting, and they have not declared it an act of terrorism.
