"Emilia Pérez" star Karla Sofía Gascón issued an apology Thursday after online users resurfaced her past posts on social media in which she appears to comment on Muslims, George Floyd and diversity at the Oscars.

Karla Sofía Gascón is facing backlash after social media users discovered a trove of controversial tweets about Islam, including one that compared the religion to “a hotbed of infection for inhumanity.” Gascón, who is nominated for best actress at the upcoming Academy Awards for her role in “Emilia Pérez,” is the first openly trans actor to earn an Oscar nomination.
