Drug-Resistant Fungus Candida Auris Spreads Rapidly Across US

Potentially deadly fungus Candida auris is spreading at an 'alarming rate,' CDC says

A fungus that is often resistant to drugs has spread at an “alarming rate” through health-care facilities in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Candida auris is an emerging fungus that is serious and potentially fatal for hospitalized patients, particularly those with multiple medical problems. The fungus was first identified in Asia in 2009, and the initial U.S. case dates back to 2013. Candida auris was limited to New York City and Chicago, but has since been detected in more than half of U.S. states and has become endemic in some areas, according to a CDC report published in the Annals of Internal Medicine on Monday. From 2019 to 2021, 17 states detected their first-ever cases of the fungus. California, the mid-Atlantic region, the Midwest, Texas and Florida had growing transmission during that time, according to the CDC.

Drug-resistant fungus Candida auris reported in these 17 states

The deadly and drug-resistant fungus Candida auris is under close surveillance as health experts work to calm its spread. Candida auris, also called C. auris, was first identified in the U.S. less than 10 years ago. Since then, the number of cases have increased every year. In 2025, new cases of Candida auris are about on track with the same time last year, according to data reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, some states are seeing far more cases than others. Of the 1,052 cases reported to the CDC so far in 2025, about a quarter are in Texas. The Lone Star State has had 241 cases of Candida auris as of late April (the latest available data from the CDC).

The study found that the aspergillus species - which can cause fatal human brain infections, destroy livestock and make crops unsafe to eat - is forecast to spread through Europe into the UK. Fungal infections are transmitted via fungal spores in the air we breathe. They are usually resolved with antifungal treatment, but people with weakened immune systems are at particular risk of serious harm.

Deadly, drug-resistant fungus spreading at ‘alarming rate,’ CDC warns - National

Fungal superbug Candida auris is spreading through hospitals and nursing homes at an “alarming rate,” the CDC says. The pathogen is highly resistant to multiple antifungal drugs and can withstand common hospital disinfectants. It has spread worldwide, triggering prolonged and challenging outbreaks in hospitals and long-term care homes, including in Canada.
