Tech billionaire Elon Musk is considering paying $5,000 in “dividends” in the form of tax refunds to American households, using DOGE savings he has yet to prove exist. The plan, which Musk responded to in a post on X Tuesday, was quickly mocked by critics on social media as way “premature.” One called the shaky offer an attempt to make the public “complicit in destroying our own government and country.” It’s unclear if Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency will ever have any “dividends” or if it will ultimately make any real inroads in the federal government’s costs, given its crippling $36 trillion debt, and the massive $4.5 trillion tax cut Republicans are now considering.
Billionaire DOGE head Elon Musk said on X, formerly known as Twitter, he would ask President Donald Trump about a proposal for a “DOGE Dividend” that would give taxpayers a refund check of $5,000 funded by the savings from his Department of Government Efficiency. After Musk’s response to Fishback gained traction, he responded to another tweet about the proposed dividend couching the commitment slightly, saying: “Obviously, the President is the Commander-in-Chief, so this is entirely up to him.”
Elon Musk showed interest in an idea that would guarantee a $5,000 payment, or 'DOGE Dividend,' to every American to show off the $55 billion in taxpayer funds saved. The Department of Government Efficiency revealed Tuesday that President Donald Trump has saved taxpayers a staggering $55 billion in less than a month. DOGE claims the savings were found through a combination of detecting and deleting fraud, canceling contracts and leases, and selling assets. 'President Trump and @ElonMusk should announce a ‘DOGE Dividend’—a tax refund check sent to every taxpayer, funded exclusively with a portion of the total savings delivered by DOGE,' he wrote. Musk replied, curious, but said that he 'will check with the President.' Fishback added: 'American taxpayers deserve a 'DOGE Dividend': 20% the money that DOGE saves should be sent back to hard-working Americans as a tax refund check.''It was their money in the first place! At $2 trillion in DOGE savings and 78 million tax-paying households, this is a $5,000 refund per household, with the remaining used to pay down the national debt. Elon Musk, let's do this! This is how we rebuild trust in our government.'
