Reform gains control of a string of councils in England and secure their second mayor after winning the Runcorn and Helsby by-election. Keir Starmer says Labour's by-election loss is "disappointing", while Nigel Farage says today "marks the end of two-party politics". Farage suggests Reform will cut DEI jobs and working from home in councils the party controls, saying: "If you work from home, forget it."
Reform UK has made electoral gains across England, outperforming expectations in county elections and posing a serious threat to Labour and the Tories. Struthers said the Runcorn and Helsby by-election win offers “proof of concept for Farage’s claim that Reform can lead the right in challenging Labour”.
With final results in from five county councils, Devon, Durham, Northumberland, Staffordshire and Worcestershire, Reform UK had gained 175 seats, with Conservatives losing 124 and Labour 72.
