An earthquake with a 7.7 magnitude has rocked Southeast Asia on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey. USGS is reporting the epicenter of the quake was in Mandalay, Myanmar, but at least one person was killed and 50 others were injured when a building that was under construction collapsed in Bangkok as the earthquake struck the region on Friday, according to Thailand’s National Institute of Emergency Medicine (NIEM), which said there was an unknown number of people still trapped in the rubble. NIEM said there were approximately 320 construction workers on site when the building collapsed at 70 people are currently missing, according to a statement published on social media. Approximately 20 workers are still trapped in the elevator shaft with the number of deaths expected to climb, NIEM continued.
Thailand’s defense minister says 90 people are missing and three are confirmed dead at the site where a high-rise building under construction collapsed when a powerful earthquake hit the capital. Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai offered no more details about the ongoing rescue efforts but first responders said that seven people had been rescued so far from outside the collapsed building. The building came down suddenly when the 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Friday, sending a crane toppling off the roof and a giant plume of dust into the air.
People are running for their lives in chaotic scenes are unfolding in Thailand after a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake rocked the country. The tremors, believed to have originated in Myanmar but severely impacting Bangkok, left people struggling to stand and buildings shaking violently, with water spilling over the top of luxury apartments in the city centre. Bangkok police say a high-rise building under construction was captured collapsing as workers fled to safety and possible casualties are not yet known. A dramatic video circulated on social media showed the multi-story building with a crane on top collapsing into a cloud of dust, while onlookers screamed and ran. Police say they were responding to the scene near Bangkok's popular Chatuchak Market, and had no immediate information on how many workers were on the site at the time of the collapse.
