Google will rename the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” on its maps for users in the United States after the change formally goes into effect, the company said Monday. People in Mexico will see the Gulf of Mexico, while those outside the two countries will see both names, Google said in a post on the social media platform X. Describing this as a long-standing practice, Google said: “When official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name. Everyone in the rest of the world sees both names." The move comes after President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week to change the name. On Friday, the Interior Department said it had made the change and is working to update the nomenclature in the Geographic Names Information System.

Google says it will take its cue from the U.S. government if it has to change the names of the Gulf of Mexico and Denali on its maps. The company said Monday that it will only make changes when the government updates its official listings for the body of water and the mountain. After taking office, President Donald Trump ordered that the water bordered by the Southern United States, Mexico and Cuba be renamed to the Gulf of America. He also ordered America’s highest mountain peak be changed back to Mt. McKinley. “We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources,” Google said in a post on X.

The Gulf of America and Mount McKinley will soon appear on Google Maps to reflect President Trump’s decision to rename the two topographical features, the company announced Monday.
