Republican Senator Mitch McConnell suffered two falls while near the Senate chamber on Wednesday, according to reports. The Kentucky Republican, 82, fell down a small set of stairs on as he was exiting the chamber after a confirmation vote for Housing and Urban Development Secretary nominee Scott Turner, according to Punchbowl News, He was quickly assisted by Senators Steve Daines and Markwayne Mullin. McConnell also fell while inside the chambers, the news outlet said, and he was later pictured being pushed around in a wheelchair. The Independent understands this to be a precautionary measure.
McConnell's fall was the latest in a string of medical incidents. The Kentucky Republican was hospitalized with a concussion in March 2023 after falling at a downtown hotel, causing him to miss several weeks of work. Upon his return, he experienced two public freezing episodes during news conferences that summer, staring blankly ahead until colleagues and staff intervened. In December 2024, he fell again while walking from a closed-door GOP lunch at the Capitol to the Senate floor, spraining his wrist and sustaining a minor cut to his face.
