Trump and Musk meeting with South Africa’s president at White House amid tense relations

A White House official confirmed Musk will join the meeting with the two world leaders, as Mr. Trump echoes Musk's claim that genocide is being committed against White Afrikaners. The U.S. accepted 59 White Afrikaners last week, granting them status as refugees. Mr. Trump has repeatedly said White farmers in South Africa have been targets of "genocide" — an allegation South Africa has rejected — and insists South Africa is "out of control." The South African government denies that White Afrikaners have faced racial discrimination. And Ramaphosa has deemed the individuals "cowards" for resettling in the U.S.

Trump to meet with South African leader as tensions rise over refugees

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will meet with President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday, in what could be a tense encounter following Trump’s repeated criticism of the country since returning to office. Trump has alleged a “genocide” is being committed in South Africa against white farmers, a claim South Africa denies. “It’s a terrible thing that’s taking place,” Trump said last week. “Farmers are being killed, they happen to be white, but whether they’re white or Black makes no difference to me. But white farmers are being brutally killed, and their land is being confiscated in South Africa.”

South Africa’s Leader Hopes to Ease Tensions With U.S. During White House Visit

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to meet President Trump at the White House on Wednesday as he tries to reset deteriorating relations between the U.S. and Africa’s largest economy. Since returning to office in January, Trump has cut off foreign aid to South Africa and alleged that white South African farmers are victims of a genocide. Trump invited Afrikaners, descendants of Dutch, German and other settlers who speak the Afrikaans language, to immigrate to the U.S. as refugees and become fast-track citizens. The first group of several dozen Afrikaners arrived for resettlement this month. Ramaphosa, who helped negotiate the end of apartheid and establish South Africa’s democracy in the 1990s, has said he hopes to dispel what he has called misinformation in Trump’s view of what is happening in South Africa.
