Aaron Glenn hiring winners, losers: Jets snag top coaching candidate from Lions

Aaron Glenn is hoping to bring the Jets to Gang Green-er pastures. The Jets have reportedly hired Glenn as their next head coach on Wednesday, replacing Robert Saleh (and interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich). The now-former Lions defensive coordinator has risen the ranks from scout to coordinator and now gets his first shot at head coaching. There may be no tougher position than the one Glenn will find himself in. The Jets are coming off a dreadful 5-12 season mired with organizational turmoil. Yeah, yeah: What else is new? You mix that with a huge question mark in Aaron Rodgers' future and the NFL's longest playoff drought and it's a recipe for pain.

Sources: Jets hiring Lions DC Glenn as new coach

On his journey from low-level scout to highly coveted coordinator, Aaron Glenn told friends his "dream job" was to coach the New York Jets -- the franchise that made him a first-round pick in 1994. It became reality Wednesday, as Glenn -- most recently the Detroit Lions' defensive coordinator -- was hired as the 19th non-interim head coach in Jets history. Terms of the deal were not announced, but sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Glenn received a five-year contract, tying him to the Jets through 2029. "I'm excited to welcome Aaron Glenn home as the head coach of the New York Jets," team chairman Woody Johnson said.

Jets hire Aaron Glenn to end coaching search

Aaron Glenn was hired to be their 19th full-time head coach on Wednesday. Glenn, who was the Jets’ first-round draft choice in 1994 and played eight seasons for the team, spent the past four years as the Lions defensive coordinator. The Jets zeroed in on Glenn during an extensive search for a head coaching candidate that saw them interview 16 different people. Glenn, 52, emerged as the favorite to get the job after Mike Vrabel decided to take the Patriots job. “I’m excited to welcome Aaron Glenn home as the head coach of the New York Jets,” Jets owner Woody Johnson said in a statement. “Aaron earned this opportunity through almost three decades of NFL experience — ten with us as a player and a scout. He brings tremendous leadership skills and the vision this organization needs to be successful. I am thrilled to see him lead this team.”
