President Donald Trump said Thursday that he will nominate his national security advisor Mike Waltz to be the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Trump said that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would serve as interim national security advisor until that post is filled. The announcement came hours after multiple news reports that Walz would leave his post amid continued controversy over his creation of a Signal messaging app chat thread that was used by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to reveal U.S. military plans.
President Trump announced on Thursday that Mike Waltz, who is stepping down from his role as national security adviser, will be his nominee for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio will also taken on national security adviser role. "I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations. From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role," Trump posted on Truth Social on Thursday.
President Donald Trump has nominated national security adviser Mike Waltz to become the next United States ambassador to the United Nations. In addition, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be acting national security adviser. Trump’s social media post caps a day of speculation that the president was planning to push Waltz out of his administration altogether. Trump withdrew Rep. Elise Stefanik’s (R-NY) nomination in March because of House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) slim majority in the chamber.
