US Military Aid Pause Strikes Ukraine Hard, Aims to Pressure Zelensky Into Peace Talks with Russia

What Next For Ukraine As Trump Halts All Aid

The U.S. has provided Ukraine with around $66.9 billion in military aid, including air defense equipment, missiles, tanks, and armored vehicles, while Europe has contributed about $64.8 billion. Since 2022, Congress has appropriated $174.2 billion for Ukraine, including humanitarian and financial assistance. If U.S. aid stops, Europe could fill the gap, but some U.S. weapons would be hard to replace, as they are either produced in limited quantities or not at all in Europe. Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba warned that Ukraine would feel the shortage of weapons in about six months. Without U.S. support, Ukraine would struggle to replenish interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems and would lose access to long-range rocket systems, reducing its ability to strike Russian targets. A major loss would be U.S. military intelligence, which surpasses Europe’s due to advanced satellite surveillance.

What happens next after Trump pauses all aid to Ukraine

After the disastrous Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Donald Trump is pausing all military aid to Ukraine. This is apparently to force Mr Zelensky to do two things: apologise to President Trump for not being grateful enough for his support, and to bring him to the negotiating table for “good faith” peace negotiations with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, orchestrated by Mr Trump. President Trump may still also want Mr Zelensky to sign a deal giving US companies access to Ukrainian mineral wealth as a type of unexpected multi-billion-dollar bill for American support and equipment provided by his predecessor, Joe Biden. That deal doesn’t contain anything on continuing US military supplies, or any kinds of security guarantee to back peace negotiations.

Trump pauses all military aid to Ukraine as he demands Zelenskyy show 'commitment to peace' following clash

A White House official confirmed that Trump is focused on reaching a peace deal and wants Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to be committed to that goal. The U.S. is "pausing and reviewing" its aid to ensure it contributes to a solution, though it emphasized that this is not a permanent termination. Despite this, Trump had previously claimed there were no discussions on suspending aid and criticized Zelenskyy for not wanting peace. He also warned that the U.S. "will not put up with it for much longer" and urged Zelenskyy to be "more appreciative" of U.S. support. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy rejected calls for his resignation and expected continued U.S. backing despite the tensions. The situation is drawing attention in Europe, with Keir Starmer emphasizing that the U.S. is "vital" to ending the war.
