A man survived the Air India crash that killed at least 200 people, a police chief has told an Indian news agency. Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik told ANI there was one survivor who was in seat 11A on the London-bound Boeing 787-8 flight - a seat the flight manifest shared by authorities said was British national Vishwashkumar Ramesh. His cousin in Leicester, Ajay Valgi, told the BBC that Mr Ramesh called his family to say he was "fine" but he does not know the whereabouts of his brother, Ajay who was also on the plane. Video shared on social media showed Mr Ramesh walking towards an ambulance, with smoke billowing in the background.
A London-bound Air India plane with 242 people on board crashed shortly after take-off in India's western city of Ahmedabad on Thursday, erupting in a fireball after it came down on a densely populated part of the city. Police said there appeared to be just one survivor from the crash, which was also believed to have killed many people on the ground. The plane collided with a hostel used by local doctors. The aircraft's tail was left sticking out of the building. According to air traffic control at Ahmedabad airport, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner departed at 1.39pm (12.09pm UAE time) from runway 23. It gave a “mayday” call, but there was no response after that.
A British passenger appears to have miraculously survived the deadly Air India plane crash that killed more than 200 people Thursday, according to local officials and video of him walking away relatively unscathed. Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who was in seat 11A when the Boeing 787-8 crashed into a residential neighborhood Thursday afternoon, is recovering in the hospital, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik told ANI news. He was found limping in the street amid the carnage after the passenger plane went down just moments after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport, the Hindustan Times said. “When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me,” the 40-year-old said from a hospital bed. “Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance and brought me to the hospital.”
