Chicago police had wanted Smollett to pay $130,000 to cover the investigation costs, but on Thursday, Chicago's law department confirmed that the donation will be made instead.
“This generous donation from Mr. Smollett is so meaningful and deeply impactful as we celebrate and honor the 10th anniversary of the historic Reparations Ordinance in Chicago,” the post read in part.
Smollett has already chosen his charity, and donated the $50,000 to the Building Better Futures Center for the Arts organization in Chicago.
