Nationally, gas currently averages $3.08 per gallon. That is five cents lower than a month ago, and 31 cents lower than the same day one year ago when gas was averaging $3.39 per gallon. AAA said the current declining prices are due largely to the falling crude oil prices and uncertainty about the economy in the months to come. "With the switchover to pricier summer blended gasoline mere weeks away, prices are likely to increase down the road on that fact alone, but market uncertainty is muddying the waters for the time being," said Mark Schieldrop, senior spokesperson for AAA Northeast. "Ultimately, the lower cost of crude oil is weighing heavily on gas prices." Patrick De Haan of GasBuddy also said the declining prices could be a sign of economic troubles. "Uncertainty over the economy, paused tariffs, the stock market has plunged, OPEC is raising production in April," De Haan said.

The national average price of gasoline has decreased by 0.6 cents per gallon in the last week, now averaging $3.03 per gallon. This marks a decline of 8.9 cents per gallon from a month ago and 36.7 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, based on GasBuddy data compiled from over 11 million weekly price reports covering more than 150,000 gas stations nationwide. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said, "The average price of gasoline in the U.S. hasn't been this low in March since 2021, when the pandemic significantly reduced demand and kept prices suppressed. This time around, caution is also playing a role in keeping prices lower—particularly uncertainty over tariffs, which is likely having a moderate impact."

Gas prices continued to fall throughout the nation on Tuesday, bringing financial relief to people as consumer prices rose in other areas. The national average price for a gallon of regular gas dropped to $3.081, according to AAA. It’s the latest decrease in the fuel sector this month after gradual increases at the pumps in February. Today’s costs are lower than the gas price from a week ago, when it was $3.099 per gallon. It is also cheaper than the average cost of a gallon of regular gas last month, when it was $3.141, and a year ago, when it was $3.397.
